Many of our clients ask, whether 14K or 19K gold is better. The main difference is that 19K rings have ¾ gold and ¼ other materials whereas, 14K is just a little more than half gold.
19K gold is less likely to cause a reaction in people who are allergic to metals alloyed with gold. Occasionally, the metals alloyed with 14K gold cause an allergic reaction in some people. If our clients are prone to an allergic reaction from the metals alloyed with gold, we will recommended our clients to set their jewelry in 19K gold.
Have a look at some 14K and 19K gold rings and you may see a difference in colour. For example, 18K yellow gold will have a deeper yellow colour than 14K yellow gold. However, 14K gold tends to discolour or tarnish due to lower percentage of hold and high percentage of copper. If our clients are in between setting their engagement ring in 14K and 19K gold, we will show them the difference. If they notice the colour difference, they will pick the 19K gold. If they do not notice the difference, they will set their engagement ring in 14K gold.
However, some 19K alloy may not be as strong as 14K alloy. With that being said, 19K gold is quite durable.
At Phera Diamonds, majority our engagement rings and wedding bands are set in 19K gold because it is hypoallergenic and resists tarnish and quite durable. Another benefit is that 19K gold does not need to be rhodium plated. More often than not, the determining factor will be whether or not 19K gold is within your budget your engagement ring as 19k gold is more expensive.
